Introduction to Load Cells
Load cell sensors are used in industrial scales and weighing
systems. Examples include truck scales (used to weigh the
amount of material a truck is hauling), hopper scales (used
to measure the amount of material in a hopper) and tank
scales (used to measure the amount of liquid in a tank
vessel). In the case of truck scales, the weight is
important to determine amount of material that is
transported so that it can be paid for, as well as to have
the accurate weight so the truck can comply with road-weight
limits. An overloaded truck is subject to fines as it
travels through each state.
Hopper scales vary in range of weight; for example, 0 -
50,000 lb. The material in the hopper is used as part of a
recipe in a batch process and the amount of material must be
accurately weighed if the recipe is to be followed
correctly. Typical tank scales can weigh liquids up to
150,000 lb, and the controls for the scales can be used to
weigh multiple batches that may be sent to a variety of
blenders and hoppers. A wide variety of small accurate
scales are also used in quality-control applications in
plants where product must meet a weight standard.
